Upper Extremity Orthoses Use in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Disease: A Systematic Review

نویسنده

  • Cynthia Clare
چکیده

Background: Orthoses decrease the effects of muscle imbalance, provide greater ease in performance of activities of daily living, prevent joint contracture, and relieve pain. There are no published systematic reviews on the use of upper extremity (UE) orthoses in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)/motor neuron disease (MND). Objective: The aim of this systematic review is to determine common orthosis interventions for ALS/MND. Methods: The authors performed a systematic review of the literature available on Medline, EMBASE, Google Scholar, PubMed, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and CINAHL.

The Criteria for Diagnosing Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis May Be Unsuitable for Clinical Use

Background: The existing diagnostic criteria for definite, probable and possible amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) require at least one upper motor neuron (UMN) sign. However, we think some cases of ALS or motor neuron disease may be not able to fulfill the required criteria. We investigated whether the clinical presentation and course of patients with ALS or motor neuron disease fulfill the ...

Atypical Initial Presentation of Painful Muscle Cramps in a Patient with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Case Report and Brief Review of the Literature

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by progressive muscle weakness that can occur proximally or distally in either the upper or lower extremities. It includes both upper motor neuron signs (spasticity, hyperreflexia, clonus, and Babinski sign) and lower motor neuron signs (atrophy, weakness, and muscle fasciculation). Initial presentation...

An Iranian familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis pedigree with p.Val48Phe causing mutation in SOD1: a genetic and clinical report

Objective(s): Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, is the most common motor neuron disease in European populations. Approximately 10% of ALS cases are familial (FALS) and the other patients are considered as sporadic ALS (SALS). Among many ALS causing genes that have been identified, mutations in SOD1 and C9orf72 are the most common genetic causes...

Brachial amyotrophic diplegia in a patient with human immunodeficiency virus infection: widening the spectrum of motor neuron diseases occurring with the human immunodeficiency virus.

Although amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and progressive spinal muscular atrophy have been recognized to occur in association with human immunodeficiency virus infection, to our knowledge, brachial amyotrophic diplegia, a form of segmental motor neuron disease, has not been previously reported. Brachial amyotrophic diplegia results in severe lower motor neuron weakness and atrophy of the upper ex...
